Keep your hand firmly on the helm of thought

Tempest-tossed souls, wherever ye may be, under whatsoever conditions ye may live, know this – in the ocean of life the isles of Blessedness are smiling, and the sunny shore of your ideal awaits your coming. Keep your hand firmly on the helm of thought. In the barque of your soul reclines the commanding Master; He does but sleep; wake Him. Self-control is strength; Right Thought is mastery; Calmness is power. Say unto your heart, ‘Peace, be still!’

This passage is one of my all-time favorites. Not only is it so eloquently written, but it speaks truth to the highest level. It comes from the book, As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen, and it is a book I have studied hundreds, if not thousands, of times.

There have been many times in my life where I have felt like a “tempest-tossed soul.” Growing up poor. Failing out of high school. Working a dead-end job. Even after I had started my commercial cleaning business and was producing great results, there were plenty of times where I felt like life was happening to me, rather than me “taking the helm of thought” and intentionally choosing the direction I wanted to go in my life.

Have you ever felt like that? Like you don’t REALLY have a say in what comes next in your story? I know what that feels like. I promise you I do. If there’s one thing about me that you should know, it’s that I get it. I really do. But I refuse to agree with this limitation for you and for me.

People say to me all the time, “well you don’t understand…” They see the life I live, the financial success I have created, and they don’t realize I’ve been where you’ve been. I’ve been stuck. Really stuck.

But because of key mentors in my life, I was able to take steps to get “unstuck.” And I want to help you do the same. And keep in mind, not all the mentors in my life were living people in front of me…

This little book by James Allen has been a key mentor for me. I have spent hundreds of hours pouring over this book, and even hundreds of hours reflecting and thinking on this one passage I opened with.

When it came into my awareness that I could choose to no longer be a “tempest-tossed soul,” I knew that was the choice I wanted to make. And step by step, I learned how to take the helm of thought. I learned what it meant to be able to say unto my heart “Peace, Be Still”, and have it resonate into the deepest parts of me.
